Duff, here. You may know me from the TV show Ace of Cakes on the Food Network. I get to work on some pretty interesting projects at my cake shop in Baltimore, but being involved in the More Birthdays campaign has got to be the most meaningful yet.
Last week I judged the American Cancer Society's Taste More Birthdays contest, a recipe competition to reinvent the birthday cake to make it better for you. And we ended up with an amazing winner.
I'm honored to be a part of this movement. We’ve all been touched by cancer, and for me, I’m willing to do whatever I can to help fight this horrible disease. So, when I heard about the More Birthdays campaign, I was excited. Together, we're working to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
An important part of this campaign, is finding ways to eat well. So, what better way to celebrate birthdays, than with a birthday cake aimed at creating more birthdays—a cake with healthful ingredient substitutions.
A better for you birthday cake? Might seem crazy, but they were really tasty!
And don't stress. This isn't an 8-level masterpiece that Charm City Cakes would spend weeks (and an episode) on. It is something that any of you can bake for your own special celebrations.
This cake is a symbol of the progress we're making against cancer. I'm encouraged by the growing movement of Americans that are standing up to this disease. This movement honors those we've lost, and it honors the 11 million cancer survivors that we celebrate with.
So, whether you're a cancer survivor, or a caregiver, a friend of one, or just a concerned person wanting to make a difference, thank you. Keep up your work. Use this cake recipe as a way to spread the word, and encourage all of your friends to join the movement by declaring the American Cancer Society the official sponsor of their birthdays.
Thanks and eat well!
